EYMS Hornsea Depot at risk of closure - 'Principal' services to continue

EYMS Press Release:

"East Yorkshire Motor Services has opened consultation with its staff to close its depot in Cliff Road Hornsea from Saturday 5 May 2018.

Falling revenue from East Riding of Yorkshire Council contracts & free concessionary travel reimbursement has required a significant reduction of costs, including the elimination of excess depot capacity.  Hornsea has been chosen for closure as its services can be run effectively from neighbouring depots in Hull & Beverley.

Should the closure go ahead after the consultation period, all the depot’s 27 drivers and engineers will be offered alternative work elsewhere in the company.

The depot’s principal services including the regular Services 240 & 246 to Hull, the Hornsea Town Service 550, Service 129 to Withernsea and Service 130 to Bridlington will continue to run, although there will be some timetable changes which will be announced closer to the implementation date."

Seems very strange to close Hornsea and move services to Beverley and Hull. Especially as the former has no engineering facilities. Been told that there will be cuts to services too, which is backed up by the gov.UK bus registration site. I believe the 246 on Sundays will be completely axed.

The Sunday 220/246 has it's subsidy withdrawn at the start of April (unless plans have changed) so withdrawal wouldn't be a surprise.

This is only a small portion of the cuts at EYMS.
3 managers made redundant plus vehicles sold plus vehicles delicensed to save on service costs plus the threat of service cuts.

Whole load of cancellations of Scarborough services now on gov.uk, plus a few new registrations. Looks like EYMS are teetering on the brink. Reckon it'll be only matter of time before they have to sell up to secure any long term future.

Unfortunately, at the present time, the sorts of measure being taken by EYMS are typical of those having to be taken by all of the big groups. For example, Stagecoach pulling out of Kings Lynn and Fort William, First cancelling high-frequency local services in Bolton and Bury, Transdev cutting back services in Blackburn such as the X41 to Manchester and Go-Ahead closing down its Anglian operation and merging it with Konectbus. So EYMS is by no means alone and difficult decisions are probably necessary if the business is to survive. Whether these changes delay or advance the day when they need to sell up could be debated for ever, but I agree it will certainly happen in time, as nothing lasts for ever !

Totally agree. Purchasing Whittles was a big mistake, throwing money every year into loss making Manchester, continuing with loss making coaching division. It appears that nobody had a finger on the pulse and Peter Shipping was running the company as a hobby and mot a business. And now after the damage has been done David is trying to turn around what's left. But as a outsider I would say it's too late in the day.
