Significant Improvements to Saturday 399

On Monday 7th April 2025 service 399 between Scunthorpe, the Isle of Axholme and Doncaster became an even interval two hourly service Monday to Friday, including peak services to/from Doncaster replacing weekday extensions of First's 357. From Easter Saturday 2026 - 4th April - almost identical changes occurred on Saturdays (when the whole service is tendered).

Previously on Saturdays - when all service 399 journeys are operated by Stagecoach - there were two full route journeys between Scunthorpe and Doncaster and four extra 'short' journeys between Scunthorpe and Westwoodside, of which the first two 'shorts' from Scunthorpe omitted Althorpe, Derrythorpe, West Butterwick, Beltoft, Owston Ferry and East Lound. Spacing between journey's wasn't good, for example three out of the six journeys from Westwoodside to Scunthorpe operated between 1626 and 1847. There was also First's 357 between Finningley and Doncaster which had one journey extended to start in Epworth in the morning peak, and one journey extended to/from Epworth in the evening peak, serving Haxey and Westwoodside en-route.

Now it's five full route Scunthorpe to Doncaster 399 journeys, including a brief diversion via Yorkshire Wildlife Park, plus two Scunthorpe to Westwoodside 'shorts' in each direction. All journeys serve all Isle of Axholme villages. The frequency is every two hours, with some variation at the start and end of the day. The Saturday 357 extensions to Epworth are withdrawn, with the 357 now operating wholly within South Yorkshire.

As well as the frequency enhancement and general simplification, the Saturday service is now almost identical to the weekday college holiday service, when most journeys are operated by Hornsbys. The exception is in Westwoodside, where the 'college time' service on college holiday weekdays follows the same route as the college day service via Newbigg. The equivalent Saturday journeys however follow the evening peak time loop via Newbigg, Doncaster Road and Westwoodside Pond, giving greater penetration of the village. For everywhere else though, Monday to Friday and Saturday timetables are now identical providing further simplification of the service.

No more early morning 11 in Scunthorpe

North Lincolnshire Council tendered Scunthorpe Early Morning Town Circular Service 11, operated by Stagecoach, was cancelled after operation on Tuesday 31st March "as funding has been withdrawn". Presumably the unusual midweek finish date was due to the financial year. No usage details for the 11 are known.

The 11 operated two journeys Monday to Saturday, departing Scunthorpe Bus Station at 0625 and 0705 and returning to the Bus Station at 0700 and 0740. From the Bus Station, service 11 operated via Ashby Road, West Common Lane, Plymouth Road, Bristol Road, Scotter Road, Lichfield Avenue, Dryden Road, Enderby Road, Willoughby Road, Chancel Road, Grange Lane South, Ashby High Street and Ashby Road back to the Bus Station.

In terms of alternatives, Ashby High Street and Ashby Road are catered for by Hornsby's service 4 Monday to Friday with 0640 and 0713 arrivals into Scunthorpe Bus Station. There is also a Stagecoach 100 Monday to Saturday along Ashby Road arriving at 0722. Plymouth Road, Dryden Road and parts of Enderby Road can access Scunthorpe Bus Station by 0727 on service 2 Monday to Saturday, whilst Grange Lane South has an 0742 first arrival Monday to Saturday on service 6. The first service from West Common Lane, Lichfield Avenue and parts of Chancel Road into Scunthorpe Bus Station now arrives at 0840 on service 3 Monday to Saturday (or 0827 using service 90 from the John Leggott College stop on West Common Lane on college days).

The sections of Bristol Road and Willoughby Road served by the 11 are now unserved, as are parts of Enderby Road. One stop on Enderby Road and a pair of stops of Chancel Road are now served only by the evening and Sunday 1A/2A.

As can be seen by the above, other than Ashby High Street and Ashby Road Monday to Friday, no replacement exists for the 11's first journey, but more areas have an alternative for the second journey.

The history of the 11 can be traced back at least 39 and a half years. As of 26th October 1986, the 340 operated from Lichfield Avenue to Scunthorpe Bus Station via the same route (other than approaching the Bus Station), with a single 0635 departure Monday to Saturday. The same timetable was still in place in the 1995, 1999 and 2000 timetables I have. By 31st March 2003 the service started back at High Street East with two departures at 0625 and 0705. The 340 was renumbered to the 13 on 24th April 2006. The starting point changed to Scunthorpe Bus Station by 1st June 2015 and the renumbering to the 11 occurred as part of the Simplibus network on 29th October 2018.

M1 now operating on Saturdays

The East Yorkshire operated M1 Moorsbus service from Hull to Pickering via the University of Hull, Cottingham, Beverley, Driffield and Malton has returned for Summer 2026. One journey in each direction continues to be provided, this year departing Hull Paragon Interchange at 0845 and Pickering at 1645. The big improvement for 2026 is that the service now operates on Saturdays as well as Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Within Hull the route has been slightly revised to serve Princes Avenue and Newland Avenue rather than Beverley Road. It is also worth noting that the M1 resumed on Easter Saturday - 4th April, rather than the early May bank holiday weekend as occurred in 2025. The season ends on September 27th.

East Yorkshire service 14 between Bridlington and Flamborough gained extended Sunday operational hours from 29th March, starting two hours earlier in the morning - 0720 rather than 0920 from Bridlington Bus Station - and running one hour later - 1820 rather than 1720 last departure from Bridlington Bus Station. The 14 operates every hour daily daytimes with a Summer Monday to Saturday early and mid-evening service.
